HARARE, Zimbabwe
Opposition leader Nelson Chamisa has laughed off claims that he has abandoned Zimbabwean politics to pursue a degree at Harvard University, describing the rumours as nothing more than “political drama.” In a message to his supporters, Chamisa urged citizens to “ignore the sideshows, lies and falsehoods,” assuring them that he remains firmly on deck and focused on the mission of transforming Zimbabwe.

THE RUMOUR MILL GOES INTO OVERDRIVE

It all started when social media went wild with gossip that Chamisa had slipped out of the country to begin a PhD at Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government. His political opponents wasted no time, claiming he had “deserted the struggle” and swapped the streets of Harare for the lecture halls of Massachusetts.

One particularly imaginative rumour even claimed that Chamisa was “studying how to stage better coups with Wi-Fi access.” Others accused him of “joining the diaspora” and leaving his supporters behind to face the music.

The only problem is that no one can prove any of it. There has been no official confirmation from Harvard, no statement from Chamisa, and not even a graduation gown selfie. The entire story appears to have been cooked up in political kitchens where rumour is the main ingredient.

CHAMISA’S RESPONSE: “IGNORE THE FALSEHOODS”

Chamisa, clearly amused but firm, responded through a statement titled Dear Zimbabwe, which sounded part sermon, part political memo, and part clapback.

“Fellow citizens, ignore the sideshows, lies and falsehoods being circulated by our opposition. Stay focused,” he said.

He reminded supporters that leadership is a serious responsibility, not a social media popularity contest.

“I’m fully aware of the huge responsibility and heavy burden upon my shoulders. And I will never let you down or fall short.”

Chamisa also addressed the obsession with his movements, suggesting that not all strategies should be broadcast like a cooking tutorial.

“Bear in mind that not all strategic decisions are shared openly or with the opposite team. Information is a strategic resource never to be shared recklessly.”

It was his polite way of saying: not everything needs a press release, my friends.

A CALL FOR FAITH AND FOCUS

In typical Chamisa style, the message quickly shifted from humour to hope. He urged his supporters to remain patient and not be shaken by gossip.

“As for you who believe and support; worry not, fear not, doubt not and more importantly, be confused not.”

He hinted that those who are currently restless will eventually understand his approach.

“Be clear and of good cheer. You will soon appreciate the wisdom of my ways. Victory and success never come cheap.”

And just in case anyone thought he had gone quiet for too long, he made it clear that he’s still steering the ship.

“My hands are on the deck, my eyes on the vision and mission. The struggle continues, and I remain steadfast, fully committed to the work that cannot pause for idle distractions.”

THE PASTORAL TOUCH

Chamisa’s post ended on a note that mixed faith, politics and wit in equal measure.

“God bless you abundantly. God bless Zimbabwe. Blessed Sunday. Forever and always ~nc #Godisinit.”

The hashtag, which has now become his signature, was both a prayer and a punchline — a reminder that no matter what people say, he still believes divine guidance is his compass. Some of his supporters even joked that if he were at Harvard, he’d be teaching a course called Faith and Focus 101.

ANALYSIS: HOW HE TURNED A RUMOUR INTO A RALLY

Chamisa’s statement was not just a rebuttal — it was a lesson in narrative control. By refusing to panic or issue long denials, he transformed the rumour into an opportunity to energise his base.

  1. He disarmed the critics with calm and humour
Instead of appearing defensive, he laughed it off. By calling it a “sideshow,” he reduced the rumour to cheap entertainment.
  2. He reminded followers of purpose
The focus on “vision and mission” put the attention back on the bigger picture — Zimbabwe’s transformation — rather than the gossip of the day.
  3. He used faith and language to rally loyalty
His mix of humour, hope and scripture resonated with supporters who see him as both leader and preacher.

A POLITICAL COMEDY OF ERRORS

The “Harvard” rumour might have been designed to embarrass Chamisa, but it backfired. It revealed just how desperate the political environment has become — where a man can be accused of studying abroad without even holding a plane ticket.

For Chamisa, it was a reminder that silence breeds speculation. For his critics, it showed that sometimes the loudest noise is also the least convincing.

THE ROAD AHEAD

Chamisa’s challenge now is not just to counter misinformation, but to maintain clear communication with his supporters in a political space where rumours spread faster than policy. His calm, faith-filled tone might not stop the gossip factories, but it does show that he knows when to fight, when to laugh, and when to keep his cards close to his chest.

For now, his message is simple and sharp: he has not abandoned Zimbabwe. He is not studying abroad. He is still on the deck, watching the waves of political gossip roll by, smiling, and steering the ship toward calmer waters.
