‘TikTok’s Infamous ‘Fake Doctor’ Scandal Shakes South African Healthcare System
Dr Matthew Lani
The Southernlive-In a shocking revelation yesterday, serious concerns were raised regarding the safety of government hospitals in South Africa. Questions have arisen about the ease with which individuals with questionable credentials can deceive even reputable media outlets through their social media following.
This scandal has come to light in the midst of a full-scale investigation into Dr. Matthew Lani, also known as Matthew Zingelwa, Sanele Zingelwa, and Bongani Zingelwa, a self-proclaimed medical expert. It appears that Dr. Lani may not hold a legitimate medical license, as suggested by the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) and his alleged alma mater, Wits University.
However, a major discrepancy emerged when, on June 16, 2022, the Gauteng health department proudly posted a picture of Dr. Matthew, identifying him as a medical intern. This has raised serious doubts about the effectiveness of the department’s vetting systems for healthcare professionals.
Dr. Matthew Zingelwa-Lani has gained significant attention recently through his presence on social media platforms, particularly TikTok. He has been offering medical advice and has appeared on various radio stations, television shows, and podcasts as a supposed medical professional, always brandishing his stethoscope as evidence of his authenticity.
It has recently been revealed that Dr. Matthew was engaged in the promotion and sale of various products, encompassing dietary supplements, wellness therapies, and health-related gadgets, directly targeting consumers in the UK. These products were actively advertised across his social media platforms, podcasts, and television appearances, with Dr. Matthew presenting himself as a reliable figure in the medical field.
However, vigilant social media users began to question his credentials. Doubts emerged regarding his claims of skipping multiple school grades, completing a medical degree at Wits University in just five years, and the inconsistency in his years of work experience relative to his purported age.
These questions prompted inquiries to both Wits University and the HPCSA. Dr. Matthew adamantly defended his legitimacy but refused to provide any supporting evidence, stating that he “doesn’t owe anyone a practice number.”
Additionally, it was discovered that one of Dr. Matthew’s aliases, Sanele Zingelwa, does appear on the HPCSA register, but this seems to be a different individual who studied in Cuba and is in his second year of internship, contrasting with the influencer doctor’s claims.
Concerns have been raised regarding the legitimacy and safety of these products, prompting regulatory bodies in the UK to initiate investigations into their effectiveness, safety, and adherence to health and safety regulations. Consumers who have bought these items are advised to exercise vigilance and consult with certified healthcare professionals for guidance.
Wits University issued a statement distancing itself from Dr. Matthew, asserting that neither of the names he uses on social media can be found in its graduate records. Verification of an MBSS from Wits University or any other South African medical institution remains unverified.

In his various videos, Dr. Matthew alternately claims to be a medical intern, a clinical psychology intern, and the owner of a pharmacology company. This, despite supposedly completing a six-year Wits MBBCh qualification in just five years, a feat that appears to be at odds with reality.
While both Wits University and the HPCSA disavow Dr. Matthew, the Gauteng health department has since issued a statement indicating that they have initiated a criminal case against Dr. Matthew for impersonating a medical professional.
