The Southernlive-Nelson Chamisa, the leader of Citizens for Coalition Change (CCC), the main opposition party in Zimbabwe, yesterday declared his party’s commitment to pursuing legal actions against fraudulent activities and impersonation following the circulation of fake press statements on the internet.

These false statements, falsely attributed to CCC, led to the declaration of 15 parliamentary seats as vacant.

The controversy began when a letter signed by someone claiming to be “Sengezo Tshabangu,” who purported to be the Secretary General of CCC, was circulated on social media.

This fraudulent letter stated that several Members of Parliament were no longer members of the CCC, sparking confusion and political turmoil. In response to this deceitful act, Zimbabwe’s parliamentary speaker declared the 15 seats in question as vacant.

“As for the impostors, we have mandated the party to pursue the legal route and to engage the authorities, including the police, to report a clear case of fraud and impersonation. We have never known this person; he has never been a part of our structure and has no mandate to represent us,” addressed Chamisa at a press conference.

Chamisa clarified that CCC is not a “structure less structure,” as some have misunderstood. He emphasized that the party has a well-defined structure that enabled them to field candidates for various positions, including the presidency, parliament, and local councils.

During his statement, Chamisa also discussed the controversial 2023 election, stating that it was a bogus election.

“The people of Zimbabwe generally agree that the election was flawed, bogus, and it violated the constitution, electoral laws, as well as regional and global standards and they have given me the mandate to use every platform, locally, nationally, and internationally, to share this view,” he said.

He further asserted, “We have a caretaker government because it’s a disputed election until a valid one is held. Mr. Mnangagwa’s choices do not have the legitimacy of the people of Zimbabwe.”

Chamisa expressed concern over reports of victimization, persecution, and human rights abuses, particularly targeting CCC candidates and supporters.

He also cited examples of MPs and polling agents facing harassment and even violence hence urged unity among Zimbabweans, regardless of their political affiliations, to address these issues and move the nation forward.

Chamisa concluded by reassuring his supporters, saying, “As a party and as a movement, we have not recalled a single MP; we are not abnormal. We cannot recall without due process. I am extending this invitation to everyone, even Zanu-PF members, because poverty knows no party.”

His decision to pursue legal action and engage with the authorities instead of taking to the streets was applauded by Zimbabwean citizens who appreciate his commitment to avoiding violence and protecting the well-being of the people.

As the political situation in Zimbabwe continues to evolve, it remains to be seen how these recent developments will impact the country’s political landscape and the future of CCC.
