In a shocking move, Floyd Shivambu, the deputy president of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), has announced his resignation from the party.

Shivambu made the announcement during a press briefing at the party’s headquarters in Johannesburg, where he revealed he had joined the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party, led by former President Jacob Zuma.

Shivambu stated that he didn’t have a specific position or promise from the new party, but wanted to serve and add value to the progressive forces in South Africa. He was joined by Mzwanele Manyi, a former government official.

The EFF has been facing challenges since the recent national and provincial elections, including the formation of the MK party, which has pushed the EFF to the fourth most popular party in the country.

Julius Malema, the EFF leader, expressed his pain at Shivambu’s departure, comparing it to the heartbreak he felt when his mother passed away.

Malema and Shivambu founded the party together in 2013.

Malema accepted Shivambu’s resignation but left the door open for his return, saying, “You are not a member, you are a founder of this political party. You are not an enemy.”

He also acknowledged that Shivambu’s departure would be a testing moment for the EFF, but emphasized that the organization must stand strong despite individual departures.

The move comes amid reported tensions between Malema and Shivambu, who had previously denied divisions between them.

Last month, both leaders were implicated in dodgy dealings related to the looting of a bank.

Shortly after the announcement, Shivambu changed his social media profile to reflect his new affiliation with the MK Party, posting a quote from Nelson Mandela’s historic 1961 statement: “The time comes in the life of any nation when there remain only two choices – submit or fight. That time has now come to South Africa. We shall not submit and we have no choice but to hit back by all means in our power in defence of our people, our future, and our freedom.”

This move signals Shivambu’s commitment to the MK Party’s mission and his willingness to take a stand against the status quo.
