Tanzanian Opposition Leaders Released on Bail Amid Mass Arrests
Tundu Lissu
Dar es Salaam – The leaders of Tanzania’s main opposition party, Chadema, have been released on bail following their arrest ahead of a planned youth day rally.
Party spokesperson John Mrema announced yesterday that Chadema chairman Freeman Mbowe and his deputy, Tundu Lissu, both of whom are former presidential candidates, were taken back to Dar es Salaam by police after posting bail.
Despite their release, Mrema mentioned that some leaders of Chadema’s youth wing, Bavicha, were reportedly still being held by the Mbeya Police Force, though further details were not provided.
The arrests are part of a broader crackdown by Tanzanian authorities, with a police statement revealing that 520 people associated with Chadema, including leaders and youth members, were detained prior to the banned rally. The arrests have sparked concerns that the government might be reverting to the repressive tactics seen under the late President John Magufuli, especially as the country prepares for upcoming elections.
Mbowe, 62, was arrested on Monday at the airport in Mbeya, a city in the southwestern part of the country, just a day after several other Chadema leaders, including Lissu, were also detained. According to the party, hundreds of young supporters were rounded up by police as they attempted to enter Mbeya.
The arrests have raised alarm among rights groups and opposition members, who fear that the government’s actions signal a departure from the more open political environment promised by President Samia Suluhu Hassan. Since taking office in March 2021, following Magufuli’s death, Hassan has lifted a ban on political rallies and eased restrictions on the media. However, the recent crackdown has cast doubt on the government’s commitment to political freedoms.
The police justified the arrests by claiming that the youth wing of Chadema intended to incite nationwide demonstrations in Mbeya, a claim that party spokesperson Mrema denied. The rally was intended to celebrate International Youth Day, with top party officials, including Mbowe, scheduled to address the attendees.
Despite the crackdown, Chadema continues to demand the immediate and unconditional release of all its detained leaders, members, and supporters. The situation remains tense as Tanzania’s political climate continues to be closely monitored ahead of the 2024 elections.
