Lusaka, Zambia – The Mwanawasa and Kakubo families have announced the untimely passing of former First Lady Maureen Kakubo Mwanawasa.
She died on August 13, 2024, at the age of 61, after a short illness at Maina Soko Medical Centre.
Born on April 28, 1963, in Kabwe, Zambia, Maureen Mwanawasa was a devoted wife, mother, and public figure. She served as First Lady from 2002 to 2008, during her husband Levy Mwanawasa’s presidency.
Throughout her life, Maureen Mwanawasa was committed to various charitable causes, including the fight against HIV/AIDS.
She founded the Maureen Mwanawasa Community Initiative (MMCI) in 2002 and served as president of the Organisation of African First Ladies against HIV/AIDS.
In 2016, she ventured into politics, contesting for the position of Executive Mayor of Lusaka under the United Party for National Development (UPND). Although she lost the election, her dedication to public service remained unwavering.
Maureen Mwanawasa is survived by her four children, including Chipokota Mwanawasa, a Zambian lawyer and businessman. Her family has announced that the funeral gathering will be held at her residence in Roma Park, with further details to be communicated in due course.
